Il Bagno Turco - Hamam

Con questo nuovo lavoro, Aldo De Scalzi e Pivio, ovvero Trancendental, confermano l'interesse per la cultura medio-orientale continuando il percorso sonoro intrapreso col precedente album d'esordio Deposizione.
Hamam è la colonna sonora del film omonimo, diretto dal regista turco Ferzan Ozpetek alla sua opera prima. Hamam, selezionato alla 50a edizione del Festival
di Cannes nella sezione "Quinzaine des realizateurs", è ambientato quasi completamente tra le strade di Istanbul ed i suoi hamam, i bagni un tempo centro di importanti attività sociali, ed ora simbolo della decadenza di un ex-impero.
Le composizioni di Hamam sono state fortemente ispirate sia dalle antiche melodie suonate durante le cerimonie trance dei sufi dervisci della regione di Konya sia dalla più contemporanea musica colta turca dei primi del '900.
Per tale lavoro, Aldo De Scalzi e Pivio hanno ricevuto diversi riconoscimenti ufficiali, tra cui il premio Globo d'Oro (migliori musiche nella produzione cinematografica 1997), consegnato dall'Associazione Stampa Estera in Italia, ed
il premio speciale per la migliore colonna sonora al Film-festival di Antalya (Turchia), l'Altin Portakal.
La realizzazione dell'album ha visto la partecipazione, oltre che dei due autori genovesi, di tre componenti degli Agricantus (Rosie Wiederkher alla voce, Mario Crispi al ney, kawwal e monotsapuno e Toni Acquaviva al derbouka e qraqeb), delle rumene Secret ai cori, di Faisal Taher alla voce, di Massimo Silanus al violino, di Bob Callero allo stick bass e di Zahir Xager alle percussioni.
Lo stesso regista Ferzan Ozpetek ha contribuito alla scrittura delle liriche del tema portante Istanbul Uyurken (di cui ha diretto anche il video-clip).
In Turchia Istanbul Uyurken è stato interpretato dalla "star" locale Gülay.

The compositions in STEAM are strongly influenced by traditional melodies of Sufi dervish trance ceremonies from the Konya region as well as Turkish music of the early 1900s, cutting edge Middle Eastern productions, and groove-oriented
ambient/trance music. Several groups signed to the Italian record company CNI (Compagnia Nuove Indye) participated in making the score:
TRANCENDENTAL, AGRICANTUS and SECRET.
Outstanding performances were contributed by Rosie Wiederkehr-the voice in the main theme song of Steam-and Faisal Taher (vocals), Massimo Silanus on violin, percussion by Zahir Xager, and Bob Callero on stick bass.
Trancendental is comprised of two Genoese composers, ALDO DE SCALZI and PIVIO. Their goal is to create a new kind of trance music, incorporating the musical traditions of the Mediterranean and creative film composing in a strongly spiritual context.
As a founding member of the new-wave group Scortilla, Pivio released EPs with them between 1980 and 1984. He was one of the first in Italy to make computer music, collaborating with the Department of Musical I.T. of the University of Genoa. He wrote and produced the soundtrack for the film Cold Ground by G. Santi and produced tracks for the albums Tuareg and Darmadar by the group Agricantus.
Aldo De Scalzi is the founding member of the progressive group Picchio Dal Pozzo, with whom he released two albums between 1975 and 1979 (Picchio Dal Pozzo and Abbiamo tutti i sui problemi). He was a longtime member and writer with the New Trolls, founded by his brother Vittorio.
He has worked with Demetrio Stratos, Fred Frith and Art Bears, among others.
Trancendental also composed the score for the film I Giardini dell'Eden, directed by Alessandro D'Alatri, again with the collaboration of Agricantus. Both of Trancendental's soundtracks include contributions by Giovanni Lo Cascio
(percussion) of Novalia, Paolo Modugno (lutes and percussion) of BROtheRS, and
Maurizio Borzone (string instruments).
Agricantus is a uniquely talented group from Palermo, Sicily. They aim for nothing less than to help preserve our human musical heritage, by blending different cultures and archaic and electronic sounds. Starting with the ethnic folk traditions and rites of their native southern Italy, they mix in modern
techniques and a vast geographical range. Their 1996 album Tuareg, was recorded in the desert of Mali, with nomad musicians and their instruments. It won the Club Tenco prize for Best World Music Album. On Steam Rosie Wiederkehr's outstanding vocals are accompanied by Mario Crispi on ney, kawwal and monotsapuno, and Toni Acquaviva on derbouka and qraqeb. The
Romanian all-female 'ethnorock' group, Secret, renders their unique blend of
exotic vocals on the track "Tavla."
The director, Ferzan Ozpetek, contributed to writing the lyrics for the title track "Istanbul Uyurken," for which he also directed the video. The "trance" version of this track hints at the style of Trancendental's 1998 album release,
Rinascimento. "Istanbul Uyurken (Hamam Trance Version)" is included in the Steam soundtrack CD as a bonus track.

"Si chiamano Trancendental, e nell'universo del nuovo cinema italiano il loro nome rappresenta già un caso. A lanciarli è stato Il Bagno Turco, di Ferzan Ozpetek, accolto trionfalmente a Cannes l'anno scorso, nella sezione Quinzaine, con una standing ovation, di dieci minuti. La colonna sonora dei Trancendental, incrocio felice fra i suoni della tradizione turco-ottomana, il sufismo e l'ambient, esaltato dalle intuizioni melodiche degli autori, si è rivelato un elemento decisivo per il successo del film. Non è un caso che la musica sia stata premiata con uno dei tre Globi d'oro assegnati all'opera prima di Ozpetek, aggiudicandosi successivamente anche la Mela d'oro di Antalya.

Una colonna sonora fondamentale nello sviluppo del film, ma anche se ascoltata fuori dal contesto delle immagini, capace com'è di suscitare profonde sensazioni. Lavoro di strenua bellezza, magnifico ed intrigante al pari delle soundtrack che hanno accompagnato altri film da Oriente, degli ultimi anni, come Underground e Prima della Pioggia.

It will come as no surprise that this soundtrack, from one of the newest gay-themed film releases, is simply a work of unimaginable art. "Steam" is the story of an Italian designer who inherits a steam bath in Istanbul and soon finds himself in love with a young man. In most cases, a soundtrack is helpless without the films cinematic imagery. This exotic, sensitive and sensuous score is influenced by traditional Turkish melodies and the trance ceremonies of the
Sufi devishes. The images and situations it invokes are quite clear. The real challenge here is finding
your way back, that is if you want to return. If all soundtracks felt this way, cinemas could end up
being empty and a thing of the past.

While the film may be about gay love in a Turkish spa, the soundtrack is about creating a sensually exotic mood, which it does with aplomb.
Created with a musical arsenal of ethnic instruments, many tracks are patterned after Sufi dervish trance ceremonies, as well as Turkish music from the early 1900s, and occasionally slightly modernized by contemporary electronics and beats. Aldo De Scalzi and Pivio (of Trancendental) are the main writers, although various artists and groups contributed.
I confess... I don't know a qraqeb from a kawwal, but I gladly immerse myself in the atmospheric cultural intermingling offered by the "Steam" Soundtrack. More of a World Music outing than Ambient, but definitely evocative and transcendental.
